Batteries have been a part of our lives for as long as electronics have. A battery is a device designed to "convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy."
The first battery was described by Benjamin Franklin in 1748. This battery was a series of connected jars, much larger than the disposable batteries of today!
Household batteries like the one in this drawing guide can provide power because they have a positive cathode and a negative anode.
When connected to an electric circuit, electrons are released in a redox reaction and begin to flow, powering the device.

Batteries are often used to power toys, flashlights, clocks, radios, cameras, and other electronics. Batteries come in many sizes, including AA, AAA, D, and C.
In popular culture, jokes and gags may revolve around a character's inability to find a battery that has power, or of batteries failing at the worst possible time. The Energizer Bunny, a pink battery-powered rabbit, is the mascot of one battery manufacturer.
Iconic for decades, the use of batteries like the one illustrated here is becoming less common. Technology such as cell phones and tablets often have rechargeable, flat, square lithium-ion batteries rather than cylindrical disposable batteries.
Someday, batteries like this one may be as unfamiliar as the phonograph and the vinyl record.
Power your drawings with this cartoon battery. Follow the simple step-by-step instructions, drawing simple shapes and lines. All you will need is an eraser and a pencil.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Battery
1. Begin by drawing an oval slanted at a diagonal angle. This will become the top of the battery. Along its lower edge, draw a curved line parallel to the oval.
2. Draw the terminal, erasing as necessary. Use two curved lines for the top and bottom of the terminal, connected by two short straight lines.
3. Draw a curved line parallel to the top of the original oval, passing behind the terminal. Then, draw parallel straight lines down from the ends of the curved line, outlining the sides of the battery.
4. Continue to extend the straight lines, noting how they converge slightly. Connect them at the bottom using a curved line, completing the basic outline of the battery.
5. Draw a curved line across the top of the terminal, emphasizing its cylindrical shape. On the side of the battery, draw a series of short, straight lines in an open rectangle shape. This will become the top of the plus sign "+" indicating the positive terminal of the battery.
6. Complete the cross-shaped outline of the plus sign using short straight lines.
7. Draw a curved line across the battery. Then, draw two straight lines that meet to form an incomplete triangle. This will become the lightning bolt-shaped logo on the side of the battery.
8. Use straight lines to complete the zig-zag shape of the lightning bolt.
9. Enclose a small rectangle near the bottom of the battery. This is the minus sign "-" that indicates the negatively charged end of the battery. Below this, draw a curved line parallel to the bottom of the battery.
Color your cartoon battery. They come in many colors. Common ones include black, red, copper, and gold.
