Batteries have been a part of our lives for as long as electronics have. A battery is a device designed to "convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy."

The first battery was described by Benjamin Franklin in 1748. This battery was a series of connected jars, much larger than the disposable batteries of today!

Household batteries like the one in this drawing guide can provide power because they have a positive cathode and a negative anode.

When connected to an electric circuit, electrons are released in a redox reaction and begin to flow, powering the device.

Batteries are often used to power toys, flashlights, clocks, radios, cameras, and other electronics. Batteries come in many sizes, including AA, AAA, D, and C.

In popular culture, jokes and gags may revolve around a character's inability to find a battery that has power, or of batteries failing at the worst possible time. The Energizer Bunny, a pink battery-powered rabbit, is the mascot of one battery manufacturer.

Iconic for decades, the use of batteries like the one illustrated here is becoming less common. Technology such as cell phones and tablets often have rechargeable, flat, square lithium-ion batteries rather than cylindrical disposable batteries.

Someday, batteries like this one may be as unfamiliar as the phonograph and the vinyl record.

Power your drawings with this cartoon battery. Follow the simple step-by-step instructions, drawing simple shapes and lines. All you will need is an eraser and a pencil.
